Could not get it to go into full screen when viewing a 1:33 film. Tried two units to no avail. Otherwise not bad. The controls are somewhat cumbersome.

Excellent for its purpose

| With headphones, the quality of this unit from an audio standpoint is excellent, if you have something other than cheap ear buds. You get what you pay for, and who cares if this is an improvement over something else? It's nowhere near as good as my 55" LCD TV either. But if we evaluate it based on its own merits, which we should, then it's an excellent buy. The transport buttons need a little getting used to, but, with the multi-angle remote, that's not an issue. With headphones, you'll have an intimate movie experience that isolates you as nothing else can. The picture quality is good, but you do have to maintain the correct viewing angle. Don't expect this to be more than a 9" portable DVD player! But as a 9" portable DVD player, it does a great job. And finally, I thought that the screen would be too small for viewing, but, as it turns out, watching this unit from a foot away is the same thing as watching a huge flat screen that's over on the wall. |
LCD Screen Broke after 3 Weeks :(

I love Sony products because they usually never break. So, I paid the premium to get this portable DVD player. After 3 weeks, the LCD screen stopped working. It now flickers, has a line through it and shows incorrect colors (almost like a film negative). I tried everything I could think of to "reset" the screen but nothing worked. It's under warranty so I'm sending it in to be fixed for free. However, I will only get a "refurbished" unit back. Maybe I should have returned it to Amazon and bought a new one.
Everything else about the unit was excellent. Battery Life great. Nice screen (when it worked). Good sound quality. Used it on airplanes and in the hotel room connected to a tv. Only goofy thing is the lcd stays on while it is connected to the tv. Maybe that caused the problem. |

| I bought this player to hook up to a monitor and play my promotional video at conventions. It not only plays store bought DVDs, but ones I've created on my MAC with IDVD. It works just as I hoped and am very pleased. I love that the screen can be turned and laid down flat to view as well. The image on the player is great and the controls are easy to use even without the remote. |
Great product - protect the battery

Great product. Like it very much. Great screen. Works very well.
What I like most is probably the sleek design, the remote, the long battery life, and....... well, that it works perfect every time.
I never charge the battery while at the same watching a DVD. I think this saves the battery.
At first I wondered if the battery would indeed last 6 hours. I tested it a couple of times, and yes, it really does last 6 hours. Only one time, it did not last 6 hours, but I suspect that's because I charged the battery while at the same time watching a movie. I think recharging the battery while watching a DVD affects the battery. Learning from this experience I never again use the DVD player while at the same time charging the battery. Now I recharge the battery only when it's completely drained, and will not use it till the battery is completely charged again. And now it goes every time 6 hours full.
If I happen to want/need to watch a DVD and the battery has run out, I take the battery of the player, and continue using the player connected to power supply, without the battery, so that the battery won't charge while I'm watching a DVD. After I'm done watching the DVD, then I will connect the battery again, and charge it overnight. That way I make sure the battery is charged to the max, and hopefully also protects the battery to last longer.
Charging the battery full takes quite a few hours. Actually I don't quite remember how long it took. But I believe it was at least 4 hours, I think it was more,... like 6 or 8 hours even. But since I charge the battery overnight, this is ok with me.
I don't care much for the turning screen. It looks cool, but I don't really use it. I was concerned about the touch-buttons, ... I don't really like touch-buttons, ... and was concerned they would not work well. I have to say, I was quite surprise with how they function. Pretty good. But besides that, there's the remote which I usually used instead of the on screen touch-buttons. It's much easier and practical to use the remote. You don't need to reach for the screen.
We actually wanted to buy a DVD player for our son (5 year). We were planning to buy the AudioFox Audiovox D1788PK 7-Inch Portable DVD Player with Bonus Headphones and Car Kit or Coby Coby Electronics TF-DVD1021 10-Inch Slim Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen. The AudioFox has better pricing. The Coby "had" better pricing, not anymore. And the time we were looking I believe there was a great deal on the Coby, where you would get the player plus a carrying case plus 2 headphones. Both have good reviews. We also know the AudioFox since our 12 year old daughter already has one of these. The audiofox is awesome for kids. I call it "kid-resistant". The AudioFox has gone through the kids hands, and endure quite some hard handling, even quite a few hard drops. They have had it for years, and it still works great.
I liked the Coby for the 10" screen. But don't know if it's as child-resistant as the AudioFox. But Amazon has a great price on it, and the reviews are good, so I was really planning on getting the Coby just for the 10" screen.
Long story short, we ended up with this more pricely Sony, because at the time we couldn't order from Amazon because we were traveling, so we had to look in stores for the DVD palyer, and none of the stores we visited had the AudioFox nor the Coby.
As for kid-resistant, well... thankfully our son doesn't fiddle as much with it, as he used to with his sisters AudioFox. The fact that we let the player in the DVD player caseTargus DVD301 10 Sport Portable DVD Player Case , probably helps that he doesn't touch so much with it. Still I do remind him every time, when I let him watch a DVD on the SOny, to be careful, not to play with the touch-buttons etc. and to call me if he wants to watch another DVD, so that he doesn't try to open it and change the DVD on his own. With the AudioFox he would do all that on it's own,... no easy handling, so the AudioFox had to endure his though doing, but it never was a problem. He would even change DVD on its own on the AudioFox.
With the Sony he's learning little by little some of the buttons, on the screen and also on the remote. I show him, learn and guide him how to, on his own pace. He really wants to do a lot on his own. And it's going well. But of course we are more cautious then we would have been with the audiofox. Not only because the AudioFox is less costly but more because we know the AudioFox can take his rough handlings. Not quite sure about that for the Sony, and it's not really something we are going to try out. We don't really want to test what happens if he drops the Sony on the floor.
All by all we are very happy with this Sony. It's sleek, cool, and works very well. And the kids enjoy it, and the youngest is learning little by little how to use it on his own more and more.
